He stepped on to the pavement, his hands held firmly in his mother’s hands, waiting to be picked up, and to be taken to his new home, a home where his past would be forgotten, and a new life would begin. He would no longer have to fear the taunts of the school children, no longer have to hide who he truly was; finally he would be acknowledged as a human being. He thought about what his mother had told him on the way here,
“We are finally going to be free brad, we are going to a land, where our dreams can be fulfilled, where we will not be condemned for what we believe in, Germany is no longer a place for us, America is our new home. We must be thankful that we were able to come here, not many people can."
His thoughts were interrupted by a body pressed against his, hugging him and crying, it was his Aunty, his Aunt Stacy who was to take them in, until they could settle in to their new home. As she was crying she muttered the normal speech which one usually does, after not having seen a family member for quite some time.
“Look at you Brad; you’ve grown quite a bit since I last saw you”.
Brad could only smile in return, his Aunt than turned to his mother repeated the same process only instead of telling her how much she had grown, she told her how much she had missed her, this caused a conversation to emerge between the two and Brad began to loose interest.
Brad tried to beak free from his mother’s tight grasp, but realized that he could not break free, giving up he started to take in the scenery that surrounded him, there
Were families waiting to board the train, so that they may go to a different city, the women were dressed in short sleeved blouses and knee length skirts, their hair covered by the fashionable felt hat. Children were running about and getting yelled at by their mothers, it reminded him of home, before Hitler rose to power, quickly he reminded himself,
“I must forget about Germany, there is no use dwelling on the past, we must look forward to the future”
His thoughts were again interrupted by his Aunt,
“Oh my, look at me keeping you standing here with your bags, you must be tired, come quick, I’ll take you to the car and we could go home”.
The luxury of driving in an automobile was something that Brad was not used to and excitement started to kick in as he stepped into the car.

It was not safe for him to be walking on these streets, four days ago Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, on the 8th of December America his home had declared war against his homeland Japan, and today President Roosevelt declared war against the allies of Japan, Germany and Italy.
Mike was torn, he was always an American, he had lived in this country his whole life, yet through his veins flowed the blood of Japanese.
Mike had heard his parents talking this morning, they were planning to go into hiding, there had been talks about internment of the Japanese people, Mike Shinoda was no longer an American, he was now Japanese.
