Lights fill a dark room, one blue, one green, both clashing together creating a loud, buzzing sound. Other then the sounds of the two lights meeting together, and the soft shuffle of feet moving swiftly across the ground, the room is completely silent. A quick movement of the green light causes the blue one to fall to the ground and with a unseen force, flies across the room.
White light suddenly fills the room, showing the two young initiates* who were wielding the beams of light, now reviled to be a lightsaber, the tool of a Jedi Knight. The young initiate holding his lightsaber to the neck of the other, who was laying on the ground, chest heaving up and down trying to fill his lungs with air.
“Beat ya,” the one standing up said with a cocky grin, turning off the saber and flicking his hair back with a slight movement of his head.
“Yeah yeah,” the one on the ground said with a laugh, “that’s why I hate fighting you Shinoda, I can never beat you.”
“Well you’re getting better, Joe,” Shinoda said with a grin and a wink, offering his hand to his opponent.
“Doesn’t seem like it,” Joe said with a sigh, walking over and picking up his saber.
“Yeah well, you need to keep practicing,” Shinoda said, turning to walk out of the room.
“I would practice, if you didn’t keep scaring people away, Mike,” Joe said with a sigh, then stood up straight when he noticed one of the Jedi Masters standing in the doorway.
“Master Allie**,” both boys said in unison, bowing their heads.
The Jedi Master smiled and bowed her head slightly in return, her long white hair falling forward slightly over her right shoulder, “Good evening. I knew I would find you two in here.”
Mike grinned a cheeky grin and looked towards his friend, “I had to try to teach Joe here some new tricks.”
Allie chuckled softly and smiled, “So I see. Sadly, this is not a social visit. Today is a very..unusual day. I’m sure you two have heard the news.”
Mike frowned and pushed his hair away from his forehead with a sigh, “No Master, I’m afraid we haven’t heard anything.”
“Mike woke me up early this morning, so we could be the first ones in the training area,” Joe said with a grin.
Master Allie shook her head with a soft, amused chuckle, “Well, I will have to tell you then. Won’t I? Well, you two know how it is unusual for us to take someone on who is almost 13 correct?”
Joe and Mike nodded, both wondering what this had to do with her news.
“Well, on a recent visit to Arkania Prime, Master Zaphorif*** came across a strange individual while he was out with his Padawan.”
“Akania?” Joe asked.
Mike whacked him over the head with a sigh and ran a hand through his hair, pushing the sweat laden hair out of his eyes, “The planet we get the cores of our lightsabers at idiot.”
“Oh,” Joe said with a laugh, “I forgot.”
Master Allie laughed softly and ruffled Joe’s hair gently, “Well, then you need to pay more attention in your classes. Even the young-lings know what Arkania is.”
“What does lightsaber cores have to do with the age-limit of a Padawan Master?” Joe asked, naturally curious.
“Right, well...when Master Zaphorif was on the trip with his new Padawan who was there to make her very lightsaber, they ran into a child, just a year older then you, Michael,” Master Allie said, glancing over at the slightly taller dark haired boy, “the boy was doing...very unique things. Things that young initiates such as yourself learn while you are here. He was tapping into the Force.”
“But that’s not possible!”
“Oh it is dear Michael,” Master Allie said with a soft laugh, “it happens sometimes, though it is very rare. We do miss some children who are able to tap into the Force, even if they themselves don’t know what they are doing.”
Mike frowned, still unbelieving but nodded in understanding anyways.
“As I was saying. Master Zaphorif found the child, when he and his Padawan were there to get the crystal. The boy was living in a cave, not too far from where they found the crystal. When Master Zaphorif saw him, the boy was frightened and put up a..kind of force field around his body and repealed the young Padawan away when she tried to approach him. It took them awhile, but Master Zaphorif was able to convince the young boy that they were not there to harm him, and they brought him back here to have a meeting with Master Yoda.”
“He wont get trained, if he’s so close to the age of 13,” Joe said, “so I think it was a waste of time to even try to get him to listen.”
“Yes that is true, but Master Zaphorif believes that it was the Forces’ will for him to find and bring the boy back to Coruscant.”
Mike sighed and folded his arms, “Why are you telling us this anyways?”
Master Allie laughed softly, used to the young ones attitude and smiled softly at him, “Because, Michael, Master Yoda has decided that though the young boy is a little too old to be trained, he will be staying with us on Coruscant inside the Jedi Temple and attend classes with children is own age.”
Mike couldn't believe what he was hearing! Master Yoda, one of the Masters on the Jedi Council who would be the least likely to bind the rules for anyone was allowing a boy in just because he demonstrated control of the Force?! He had worked his entire life to get where he was: top of the class in all of his classes, best dueler in his age group, and able to stand up against even the strongest of the Padawan’s in one-on-one combat. There was no way he was going to let some unknown boy jump in and take over.
Even as Yodas voice played in the back of his mind, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering,” Mike felt himself growing jealous, and angry. He knew that both of those feelings were not good, because they led to the dark side, but he couldn’t help it. There was only one way to make sure that this other boy didn’t upstage him.
~*~*~*~*~
A young boy, just shy of the age of eleven, sat alone in the hallway of the Jedi Temple. He had snuck away from the Jedi Master who was supposed to be giving him a tour of the Temple which was to be his new home. He didn’t want to be here. He wanted to go home, but the problem was, he wasn’t sure how to get back home. Everything here scared the poor boy, there were so many people staring and whispering, he couldn’t take it.
When the Jedi Master was busy talking about the different rooms that could be found in the Temple, the boy snuck away and hid behind a statue, squeezed in the small space between the marble figure and the wall.
The boys name was Chester. His face was skinny and pale, with wide brown eyes, soft and slim lips. His body was tall and lanky, obviously that of a young kid, one who had yet to grow to complete maturity.
This plant he was on (he couldn't quite remember the name even though he was sure that the Jedi who had brought him here had told him) was a lot different from his home planet. While his home planet had constant lightning strikes (though it lacked any rain, wind, or thunder that would usually accompany such a storm) this planet was always sunny. He had only been here for a short period of time, but the sun seemed to always be shining on this planet. The constant light and heat was causing Chester’s fair colored skin to turn a light pink.
A sudden sound of footsteps rushing down the hallway jerked Chester form his thoughts and he pulled his knees up closer to his chest, hoping to make himself seem smaller so that whoever was coming down the hallway would not notice him.
The footsteps grew closer and soon the cause of them was reviled. A boy, not much younger then himself, was walking briskly around the corner, the bottom of his robe flaring out behind him. His long legs carried him quickly across the floor as the boy walked, flicking his hair out of his eye with a swift movement of his head.
The boy was dressed in the traditional robes of a Padawan learner: A pair of dark, almost black, leather boots that were knee height, over a pair of baggy black trousers, a black tunic that fell over a light grey undertunic, and a long flowing black hooded robe.
Chester rested his chin on his knees, watching silently as the other boy got closer, hoping that he’ll go unnoticed. Of course, must have been luck against him that day because the boy stopped just a few feet short of where Chester was resting against the wall and stared at him with dark brown eyes, thick eyebrows low in a kind of glaring look.
“Who are you?” The boy asked.
Chester remained silent and just shrugged his shoulders in reponse.
“I’ve never seen you around the temple before, which could only mean one thing. You’re that kid that they brought back from Arkania Prime.”
Chester nodded silently and looked down at his feet, silently comparing his own, warn shoes to the pristine appearance of the other boy.
The darker haired boy glanced the other over with a frown, “I honestly don’t see what the big deal is about you. You’re so...small.”
“You shouldn’t judge people by their size,” Chester said in a soft whisper, finally speaking up, “isn’t it true that one of the greatest Jedi Masters in this council is a small as a child?”
For once, the darker haired boy was speechless, unsure what to say to that comment.
“You don’t know me, and I don’t know you. You shouldn’t judge me before getting to know me.”
And so, that day was marked as the first day in his life, that Michael Shinoda was actually too stumped for words. He had finally met his match, in a skinny boy from Arkania Prime.
This is the story of the rise, and fall of the two greatest Jedi the Republic has ever known.
