Mike Shinoda and his mother were in a stare down. It was a while before either of them spoke.
“I’m not going,” Mike said, with crossed arms.
“You’re going to the fireworks tonight with us, whether you like it or not,” his mother spoke.
“No. I’m not,” Mike said back to her. Mike hated social events. He wasn’t a very social guy. Mike had friends, of course, but he hated all of them. He just acted like he was friends with them. Anytime he was forced to see them put Mike in a shitty mood. Sure, they were good people, but Mike just prefers sitting at home, talking to people he actually likes online.
“Yes, you are. You always stay inside, and now it is summer! Get up, we leave in 5,” his mother told him.
Mike sighed and went to get a jacket. He really didn’t want to go. Especially if he saw his crush. That would make this entire experience very awkward. He grabbed his favorite hoodie and headed for the door. Every time he goes to these things at night he gets eaten alive by bugs. At least with a hoodie he can wake up the next day with unbitten arms.

“Why do I have to go?” Rob Bourdon questioned. He was in the car with his mother and sister heading to see the town’s fireworks.
“Because all of us are going and so are you,” Rob’s sister explained.
“But these things are so stupid. We go and sit in a field watching mini bombs pollute our Earth. It’s pointless!” Rob argued.
“Rob, be quiet,” Rob’s mother told her only son. “We go every year. Why do you suddenly not want to go?”
“Because I don’t wanna risk seeing him,” Rob thought.
“Because summertime’s the one time of year where I don’t have to see annoying douches,” Rob said instead.
“Robert! Language!” his mother shouted. She was a real hard ass about language.
“Sorry, but it’s true!” Rob protested. “Every time I go to these things I see everyone from school that I plan on forgetting about!”
“Well get over it! We’re here,” Rob’s mother told her son.
Rob sighed and hopped out of the car. Almost instantly, he saw someone he knew from school.
“One,” he counted. Whenever Rob went anywhere social, he counted how many people he saw. He got up to twenty once. Rob was a social child, and he had lots of true friends. He was one of the most popular kids in the high school. But this night, he wasn’t in the mood for anyone. He had just broken up with his girlfriend and was still feeling crummy about it. Sure, he had his eye on someone else for months now, but no breakup is enjoyable. Rob sighed and walked along.
“Two, three, four...”
~
Mike was sitting on a blanket near a tree. His mother and sister went off to find other people to sit with, and Mike was perfectly okay with it. He saw someone he knew from school, so he pulled out his phone and pretended to not notice.
Sadly, it failed.
She noticed and ran over. It was Anna. The only girl in school ever to have a crush on Mike. Anna was a sweet girl, but she was very loud and obnoxious. The fact that she liked Mike surprised everyone in the school. Mike was the exact opposite.
“Hey Mike!” Anna called out.
“Oh, hi Anna,” Mike said back once she got closer. She hugged him around the shoulders and sat next to him.
“I didn’t think you were going to show up,” she started.
“Yeah, I didn’t really have much of a choice,” Mike explained.
Anna burst out laughing for no real reason. Her laugh was loud and awkward. Mike sighed and lied down on the blanket. He closed his eyes for a minute and imagined he was somewhere far away.
He was in some foreign country with his crush. They were all alone, and no one was within 50 feet of their small house. Mike put his arm around his crushes back and he smiled. They leaned in to kiss, and Mike felt true happiness.
“Mike? Mike? Are you listening?”
Mike jerked himself back to reality and remembered where he was.
“Uh yeah, totally,” he lied.
“You’re so funny,” she giggled. “Oh, look, there’s Rob. Hey Rob!” she started waving over in his direction.
“No. No. NO! Not Rob! Anyone but him!” Mike thought. But by the time he was sitting up and was half awake, Rob was already at the blanket.
~
Anna called Rob over from across the field. Rob really didn’t want to have to face her so soon after their break up. Sure, they both liked the same person, but she had a much higher chance of actually getting with him. Rob reluctantly walked over to where Anna was sitting. She was sitting with someone else, but Rob couldn’t see from that far away. As he walked closer, he was able to make out who it was.
Mike.
Rob’s stomach clenched up and he slowed down a little. “Oh. Hey Anna. Hey Mike,” Rob gave a small wave in the boys direction.
“Hi,” Mike half whispered.
“Hey! Wanna join us for the fireworks?” Anna asked.
“Please say no, please say no,” Mike’s mind pleaded.
“Uh, sure,” Rob answered. Mike’s mind was defeated and Rob’s was scared.
“Awesome! They should be starting any minute. Oh, look, there’s Jess! I’ll be right back. Hey, Jess!” Anna ran off to meet her friend.
Rob was still standing there, next to Mike’s blanket. “Uh, may I sit?” Rob asked, hesitantly.
“Yeah, go for,” Mike answered. The blush on his face felt like the sun. Thank god this was a night event.
Rob and Mike sat in silence for what felt like ever. Neither of them knew what to say to break the silence. Thankfully, Anna came back after a few minutes.
“I’m going to run off and get some drinks. You guys want anything?” Anna offered.
“Don’t. Leave,” both of their minds begged.
“Uh, just some water,” Mike told the girl.
“Some Coke would be nice,” Rob replied.
“Awesome! I’ll be back,” Anna said, skipping away. The awkwardness continued. Rob started flipping out over bugs on his arms after a while, however. Mike noticed and decided to actually make himself useful for once.
“Want my hoodie?” Mike offered. He didn’t care about bug bites anymore. He didn’t want Rob to be eaten alive.
“That’d be great,” Rob said, the blush on his face feeling like fire. Mike took off the hoodie and handed it to the other teen. Rob put it on and smiled. Mike melted at the sight of the grin. The fireworks started then, and both guys turned their heads towards the sky.
The sky exploded with the colors of the rainbow. Reds, blues, greens, any color imaginable was in the sky tonight. Mike and Rob weren’t completely focused on the color. They were also focused on each other.
By now, they were sitting closer together than before. Rob’s hand every now and again brushed against Mike’s, and Mike felt sparkles up and down his spine. Mike turned his head towards Rob and smiled whenever this happened. Rob’s heart melted at the sight of Mike’s famous smile. Mike had a smile that could make the world’s most depressed person just a little happier. Mike scooted over just a little more to Rob and Rob moved over closer to Mike. There was no room between them. Not even for air.
Before long, Rob leaned his head on Mike’s shoulder. Mike’s heart stopped for a second and looked down.
“Is this really happening?” Mike wondered. “Is this really fucking happening?”
“He’s letting me do this. Oh. My. God. He’s actually letting me do this. Please let me stay like this. Your shoulder is quite cozy,” Rob thought.
The finale of the fireworks was coming up, and more colors shot across the night sky.
“I’m going to do it. I’m going to do it,” Mike told himself.
And he did.
Mike turned Rob’s face towards his own and leaned in to kiss him. Rob was shocked, but returned the kiss with full passion. Their mouths moved in sync.
“Oh my God. Oh my God. OH MY GOD THIS IS HAPPENING!” Rob’s mind screamed.
“I did it! And now this is actually happening! Holy shit!!” Mike’s mind spoke.
“Hey! Sorry I took so long- MIKE?! ROB?!” Anna screamed. The two guys broke away and looked up to see a very angry Anna standing over them, holding a water bottle and a can of Coke. Neither of the guys knew what to say. They just sat there with goofy grins plastered on their faces.
“I can’t believe you two!” Anna screamed. She opened the water bottle and poured it all over the two men, making them jump a little. She did the same with the Coke, and then she stormed off.
Mike and Rob sat there, covered in sticky Coca Cola, and looked at each other yet again. Rob took Mike’s hand and kissed it, taking in the sweet taste of Coke.
The two didn’t even have to ask to become each others boyfriends. They knew they wanted each other with no words spoken. As they walked back to their families, Rob started to take off the hoodie to return it to his new boyfriend.
“Keep it,” Mike told him, placing a kiss on his cheek.
“Thank you,” Rob said back, pulling him into a hug good-bye. “I’ll see you soon, okay?”
“Sounds perfect,” Mike whispered. They pulled back a little to kiss good bye, and they walked away.
~
Once Mike was back in the car to head home, he looked down at his arms. Little red bumps took over on his skin.
“It was so worth it.”
