Title & inspiration for this first chapter from "Hit the floor - Linkin Park"

One. Just before you hit the floor

The Agoura High School's bell rang for the last time that year. Screams and laughter filled the halls of the school. Someone clapped hands, thanking God for the next months of summer holiday.

“Chaz!”

“Hey man, what’s up?” Chester turned around to see a black haired boy running towards him. His black t-shirt, far too large for his body, was flying like silk around his hips.

“It’s over!! Oh god I can’t believe it! We’re fuckin’ free!” His Asian features prominently displayed his excitement over the end of the school year.

“Yeah. Have I ever told you how much I love summer? Sleep, girls, beer… and… sleep and…” Chester’s dark eyes chased after clouds with pleasure.

Mike broke out into laughter at his friend's fantasy. “Yes, you tell me that nearly every day.”

“I fucking love it! What about you Mike? What are you doing this summer? You’re staying here, aren’t you? I’m thinking of what we could do at-"

“Chaz… You know I’m in the drama club, right? So, we’re thinking of preparing for a play...” Mike’s voice sounded guilty as he scratched the back of his neck.

“During summer?”

“Yeah. There's going to be a competition at the end of the season.”

“So you’ll be busy, huh? Yeah, I understand that. Drama club instead of friends…”

“Shut the fuck up dude! You know I don’t think that.”

“Well, you’re doing that.”

“Listen. You wanna come?”

“What?!" Chester let out a sarcastic laught. "Yeah that’s funny.”

“Oh Chaz please come with us! I promise that it will be fun!”

“Bullshit! I don’t like drama and I don’t like working in summer.”

“We’re not working! It’s-”

“I said no.”

“But-”

“MIKE! Fuck no.”

That initial smile on Mike’s face faded as he lowered his head. “Ok, then. Enjoy your empty summer, you blond.”

Chester laughed at Mike's comment. "I will. Have fun acting.”

“I will. Bye Chaz.”

The two boys walked away from each other, however there was a small, nagging voice in each of their heads.

‘Summer isn’t summer without your best friend.’

***

“I'M HOME!”

“Please Chazy don’t yell like that! Daddy’s sleeping.”

“Sorry, mum. I’m home." He whispered, as his mum smiled politely.

"How was your last day of school?”

“Awesome! And you know why? Because it’s the LAST!” Chester covered his mouth, as he almost screamed the last word. It was difficult to contain his excitement.

“I’m glad you’re so excited honey. I have some plans for this summer.”

“What plans?”

“You know, your father needs some fresh and unsoiled air…”

“Mum... What?”

“We’re going to Phoenix for a month, to your grandma’s. Is that ok?”

Silence.

Of course it WASN’T ok. Phoenix meant Grandma Mary. Grandma Mary meant monotony. Monotony meant prison. A nice, green sweet prison, but ever a prison.

His grandma’s house was a small cottage in the extreme periphery of the city. It had white walls and a dark green roof, all surrounded by plants, flowers, trees and a perfect lawn.

Mary also had a nice dog named Kiki (yeah, his grandma wasn’t so good at names), a Bobtail with very long, white and black hair. She was a funny dog; her eyes were hidden by hair and her tongue was always dangling out of her mouth, as her tail swung from side to side.

Chester Bennington went to Phoenix every summer, until his eleventh birthday. The trips stopped when he was eleven because of his father's frequent tiredness and ailment. His family decided to stay at home in Los Angeles during the summer; they could at least go to the seaside on weekends. Chester was pleased with this arrangement; he could hang out with his friends all time, without restriction, curfews or any other annoyance.

“Chaz?” Chester woke up from his thoughts as his mum called his name. “So, what do you think?”

“Erm…uh…I think…sorry” He hurried upstairs to his room, slamming the door behind him.

“FUCK!” He screamed, not caring about his father sleeping downstairs. He kicked the wall, and suddenly a tingling pain rose in his foot. He cursed himself in all the ways he knew as he fell down on his bed. He bit his lower lip, teeth scraping against his metal lip ring. He sank his head in the pillow, screaming louder.

Ten minutes later, he lifted his head from his pillow and glared at his cellphone, laying on his bedside table. His blond spiked hair was falling tiredly on his forehead and he pushed it out of his eyes, only to have it fall back and obstruct his view again.

“Hello?”

“Mike?”

“Chaz! What’s up?”

“I was thinking of... er... am I still in time for the drama club?”
